Bossier City Council votes on yard parking ban; Carriageway opens Monday
A ban on parking in front and side yards of residences in Bossier City didn't even deserve discussion at Tuesday's City Council meeting.
Without comments from the council — not even a pitch for the measure from its sponsor — a 3 to 2 vote defeated the ordinance. It was sponsored by District 1 councilmember Brian Hammons and supported with a 'yes' vote by At-Large councilmember Chris Smith.
Councilmembers Don Williams, Jeffery Darby and Vince Maggio voted against the ordinance.
The initiative was rejected and will not proceed to a second and final vote.
Term limits rejected, rejected, rejected — and rejected again
Yet another city council resolution to bring term limits before the voters of Bossier City failed again Tuesday.
Councilmembers Don Williams, Jeffery Darby and Vince Maggio voted against the resolution. Once again, Brian Hammons and Chris Smith were the only two 'yes' votes.
Councilmembers Jeff Free and David Montgomery were absent.
City holds property tax rates unchanged
The council gave final approval to roll back its millage to avoid a tax increase.
A recent reassessment by the Bossier Tax Assessor's Office raised property taxes for all homeowners in Bossier Parish due to higher values. Local taxing authorities can either increase or decrease a millage due to the change in the tax-value base. A "roll back" of a millage lowers the tax rate to compensate for the increased valuation — meaning property owners pay the same amount of taxes.
The City of Bossier City is the lone local taxing authority so far to roll back its millage to avoid a tax increase.
A "roll forward" of a millage allows the taxing authority to gain additional revenue from the reassessment — in effect, a tax hike.
Tax roll forwards have been approved by Benton Fire District 4 Chief J.T. Wallace, Jr. and Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington.
The Bossier Parish Police Jury has announced it will roll forward its millage. BPPJ will hold a hearing and Jury vote on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the Police Jury Meeting Room at the Bossier Parish Courthouse.
The Bossier Parish School Board announced a roll forward in August but delayed an initial meeting, saying it was looking to "provide tax relief." What that means is unclear.
The BPSB's millage decision will be announced prior to a hearing and vote at 4 p.m. October 31, 2024, at the Bossier Instructional Center on Airline Drive.
New East Bank restaurant and bar gets alcohol approval
The council also approved the retail sale of high and low-content alcohol for on and off-premise consumption at a proposed restaurant and bar, The Hanger Taphouse and Kitchen, located at 310 Mansfield Road, in the East Bank District.

That rain you heard this morning: It's a cold front
Remember cold fronts? Yeah, it's been a while.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue to work into the Bossier area today as the cold front continues to move south.
"This trough is very progressive in nature, with rain chances beginning to diminish by the afternoon hours," the National Weather Service said. "Once this cold front finally clears the region, expect the rest of the short-term to be very pleasant."
Dry conditions should remain into the weekend, with afternoon highs dropping to a much more seasonable feel. The same can be said for overnight lows, with lows dropping into the upper-50s to low-60s.
Airline High School senior named National Merit Scholar Semifinalist
Airline High School senior Georgia Price has been named a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist.
Price is at the top of her class and is involved in multiple organizations at school. She's also in the Bobbie Cates Hicks SMART program at LSU Health Shreveport, which is for academically advanced high school seniors who have an interest in STEM careers.
"Being chosen as a Semifinalist is a true feat given that 1.3 million students across the nation take the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program before the pool is narrowed," Bossier Schools said in a social media post. "Georgia is one of only 237 seniors in Louisiana to earn the distinction and is now eligible to advance as a Finalist."

Looks like the only way it will go before voters is through court action.
These politicians who keep voting against term limits have got to be held accountable.
