BREAKING: Judge rules Bossier City Council must put local term limits up for a vote
The council three times voted to reject a citizens' petition to bring a vote on local term limits.
District Judge Parker Self ruled today that the Bossier City Council must move forward with the local term limits petition by putting the matter before voters.
A certified petition requesting local term limits be put on the ballot was presented to the council three times by Mayor Tommy Chandler. Each time, the council defeated the resolution.
Voting against the resolution were Jeffery Darby, Jeff Free, Vince Maggio, David Montgomery, Jr., and Don Williams.
Two council members voted to put term limits before the voters: Brian Hammons and Chris Smith.
Judge Self ruled that the City of Bossier City and the City Council of Bossier City must “perform its nondiscretionary/mandatory duty of calling an election to submit to voters the proposed propositions which would serve to amend the City Charter as proposed in this petition.”
Bossier City Mayor Tommy Chandler issued the following statement:
“I did not bring the suit. I appreciate Judge Self’s timely response to the case, and I am proud that the citizens of Bossier will have an opportunity for their voices to be heard on the issue of term limits.”
