Art exhibit at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center highlights sickle cell awareness through powerful patient-created works
An inspiring new art exhibit is now on display at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center on the campus of LSU Health Shreveport. It showcases powerful works created by patients, caregivers, staff and local artists to raise awareness of the struggle of those living with sickle cell disease.
Called “Artistic Expressions,” the exhibit features paintings, pottery, photography and mixed media works displayed throughout every floor of the cancer center. It’s part of a growing effort by LSU Health Shreveport to raise awareness of sickle cell disease, a painful, often misunderstood condition that impacts thousands across the country, particularly in African American communities.
“We want everyone who walks through the doors to feel encouraged and inspired, even if just for a moment,” said Jackie Wilson, RN, BSN, who serves as the Adult Sickle Cell Program Specialist at Feist-Weiller. “There’s something here for everyone, from abstract art to anime and each piece tells a unique story of strength.”
The artists range in age from 13 to more than 80 years old, with contributions coming from sickle cell and oncology patients, LSU Health Shreveport staff and local artists from across the ArkLaTex.
“It means so much to our patients to see their art displayed publicly,” said Ron Nierman, MA LPC, CGP, Patient Support Group Leader at Feist-Weiller. “It helps them feel seen, supported, and appreciated. Especially those living with sickle cell disease, which is often an invisible illness.”
“There are a lot of misconceptions about sickle cell disease,” Wilson said. “This exhibit is one way we’re helping shift the narrative. Our patients are incredibly talented, creative, and strong, and this gives them a platform to express that.”
The exhibit is free to attend and open during the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center's normal clinic hours, located on the LSU Health Shreveport campus. Visitors are welcome to stop in and experience the artwork now through July 18.
