Bossier City now under Winter Storm Warning: The latest forecast models
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until noon Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest snow and ice accumulation is expected along and north of the I-30 corridor. Lesser amounts of snow and ice are expected farther south and east.
Precipitation is expected to arrive through the mid to late morning hours, expanding east into the afternoon.
Bossier Parish Schools will be open today, Thursday, January 9. However, the YEP program will be canceled, and all extracurricular and after-school activities will be postponed until a later time. The BPSB will continue to carefully monitor the forecast and provide an update at 4 p.m. Thursday regarding school operations on Friday.
“Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected across much of the Warning area,” the NWS says. "Ice accumulations up to one third of an inch possible."
“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes,” the NWS says. “If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.”
Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes.
Work crews with the Bossier Parish Highway Department have prepared vehicles and equipment to ensure they are ready for any potential adverse weather forecast for the area.
Wednesday, crews were busy testing and loading the Salt Dogg sand-spreading apparatuses onto work trucks. Another truck was outfitted with a tank and filled with brine, ready to de-ice roads in the parish when needed.

Bossier City and Bossier Parish closings
Bossier Parish Community College campuses in Bossier, Natchitoches, and Sabine Valley are closed Thursday, January 9, Friday, January 10, and Saturday, January 11, anticipating winter weather conditions expected to impact the north Louisiana region. This precautionary closure is being made to prioritize the safety of BPCC’s faculty, staff, and students. Virtual classes will continue as scheduled, and student services will remain accessible online. Students enrolled in face-to-face classes starting on Thursday or Friday should check Canvas for updates and instructions from their instructors. Campuses are set to reopen, with all classes resuming on Monday, January 13th.
There will be no mail delivery in Bossier Parish Thursday, but it’s not because of the weather. Post offices are closed in honor of former President Jimmy Carter.

The parishes that will be closed are Bossier, Sabine, Natchitoches, Grant, LaSalle, Catahoula, Concordia, Tensas, Franklin, Caldwell, Winn, Red River, DeSoto, Bienville, Jackson, Ouachita, Richland, Madison, East Carroll, West Carroll, Morehouse, Union, Lincoln, Claiborne, Webster, Caddo and Rapides.
Bossier Parish leadership prepared for the winter storm
Bossier Parish Police Jury members and staff, officials and first responders from both sides of the Red River, and staff of the Department of Transportation and Development met Wednesday morning at the Bossier Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness to develop a plan to keep the highways and bridges in both parishes open for traffic ahead of the winter storm forecasted for the area.
Officials said last year’s strategies for maintaining traffic on I-20 and I-220 were adequate to implement ahead of this Winter Storm Cora. This year’s plans include dispatching road crews to pretreat the roadways and bridges with brine and then adding salt and sand to prevent any frozen precipitation from sticking.
