Bossier City weekend weather — Today: Cloudy. Snow, rain, sleet and freezing rain likely this morning. Little if any additional snow and sleet accumulation expected. Ice accumulation around a trace. Highs in the mid-30s. Chance of precipitation 70%. Tonight: Mostly cloudy. Cold with lows in the mid-20s. Saturday: Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid-40s. Saturday night: Mostly clear. Bossier City roads no problem so far; NWS says road refreezing could occur through Saturday morning
In Bossier City, the winter storm has been mainly a rain event. Temperatures moderated, and freezing was minor before sunrise. The Louisiana DOTD issued no reports of road closings in northwest Louisiana.
However, the National Weather Service says the potential for wintry precipitation will linger for a few hours more in the Bossier City area.
"The Winter Storm Warning will remain in place through this morning. Although precipitation will come to end by midday, any lingering moisture on area roadways will quickly refreeze tonight into Saturday morning," the NWS said.
Additional precipitation could develop mainly near and north of the I-20 corridor through the noon hour, the weather agency added.
"As the trough nears, the thermodynamic profile will be cooling from the top down and that could be the necessary ingredient to change the precipitation type from a cold rain or a rain/freezing rain mixture to a sleet/snow mix further south closer to the I-20 corridor … before we lose this moisture all together later this afternoon," an early morning statement said.
"For this reason, have decided to leave the Winter Storm Warning and Advisories intact with this forecast package with the understanding that at least some of this could be cancelled earlier than the noon expiration time."
Accumulating snow was mostly isolated to Southeast Oklahoma and Southwest Arkansas.
As of 6:30 a.m. this morning, about 800 SWEPCO customers in Bossier Parish were without power, less than 1 percent of the parish's customers.
Bossier Parish schools and state offices remain closed today.
Sheriff to award $1,000 scholarship opportunity to a Bossier Parish high school senior
Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington has announced that the Bossier Sheriff's Office will be participating in awarding a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior in Bossier Parish. The scholarship is available through the Louisiana Sheriff's Honorary Membership Program.
The goal of this program is to support and encourage local students as they continue their educational journey at a higher institution.
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Be a permanent resident of Louisiana.
Be a graduating student from a Bossier Parish high school.
Be eligible for admission to the school listed on the application.
Plan to be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in an accredited higher education institution within the state of Louisiana.
"Education is a powerful tool that opens doors to brighter futures," said Sheriff Whittington. "We are excited to offer this scholarship to a deserving student who will continue their studies in Louisiana. This is one small way we can invest in our community's future."
Scholarship applications must be submitted by April 1, 2025. All scholarship winners will be announced by May 1, 2025. Additional information on the application process can be found on the Louisiana Sheriff's Association website.
