Bossier City Weekend: Cody Johnson, Wade Bowen, Gladys Knight and more
It's a weekend of musical star power in the Bossier City area.
Platinum recording artist and CMA Male Vocalist of the Year nominee Cody Johnson brings The Leather Tour to the Brookshire Grocery Arena Saturday.
Johnson is coming to town with some heavy career momentum. He has received five nominations for the upcoming “The 58th Annual CMA Awards” including Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for Leather, Single of the Year for “Dirt Cheap” and two nominations in Music Video of the Year for both “The Painter” and “Dirt Cheap.”
Wade Bowen will open the show, bringing a legacy of Texas troubadours stretching back over 50 years. Bowen's influences include Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Robert Earl Keen. And he's road-wise: with two decades and more than 4,000 shows under his Texas belt.
"Revered as one of the genre’s finest and most authentic modern voices, Bowen’s approach is rooted in tradition, but also stands on the creative cutting edge," his bio says.
Meanwhile, legendary Gladys Knight will perform across the river at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium.
With seven GRAMMY awards and 50-plus years of entertaining, Knight is known for classic #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary music, including “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” and “If I Were Your Woman.”
The weekend of live entertainment kicks off early with Pony Bradshaw's show tonight at the Louisiana Grandstand. And Friday night, comedian Rodney Carrington takes the stage at the Paradise Theatre in the Margaritaville Casino.
Francine leaves southeast Louisiana battered, drenched, and battling sewer issues
As Hurricane Francine made its way through southeast Louisiana, it left behind a broad swath of power outages Wednesday night that has forced residents to ride out its worst effects in the dark.
More than 288,000 utility customers across 21 parishes were without electricity as of 9 p.m., according to FindEnergy.com. Power restoration crews won’t go out until winds are less than 30 mph for the sake of safety.
Entergy Louisiana reported nearly 224,000 customers without power across its entire service area.
FindEnergy.com showed Orleans Parish with the highest number of outages (61,410), followed by Jefferson (49,602), Lafourche (34,888) and Terrebonne (25,150).
The power problems have been compounded in Jefferson Parish and Orleans, where officials say electricity has been knocked out to sewer lift stations. Without the ability to move effluent, raw sewage could flow back into homes.
Jefferson Parish emergency contractors are dealing with severe weather conditions as they attempt to provide temporary power to the lift stations and vacuum out the full ones. Tanker trucks will transport the waste to a sewage treatment plant, though high winds and heavy rain could hamper efforts.
In New Orleans, the Sewerage and Water Board asked consumers to conserve water and limit the use of appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.
“It is critical that we don’t place added stress on our system as we work to bring it back to full capacity,” S&WB executive director Ghassan Korban said. “We will be using generators and other equipment to provide additional functionality to support our system.”
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development says numerous roads are blocked due to downed trees, debris and power lines. DOTD crews will begin roadway assessments and cleanup operations as soon as conditions allow. Due to hazardous debris and ongoing risks, motorists are strongly advised to avoid traveling until it is deemed safe.
