Bossier Schools to hold property tax meeting today
The last taxing authority to consider raising your taxes meets today: The Bossier Parish School Board.
A recent reassessment by the Bossier Tax Assessor's Office raised property taxes for homeowners in Bossier Parish due to higher values.
Local taxing authorities can either increase or decrease a millage due to the change in the tax-value base. A "roll back" of a millage lowers the tax rate to compensate for the increased valuation — meaning property owners pay the same amount of taxes. A "roll forward" of a millage allows the taxing authority to gain additional revenue from the reassessment — in effect, a tax hike.
Tax roll forwards have already been approved by Benton Fire District 4 Chief J.T. Wallace, Jr. and Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington.
The City of Bossier City announced a roll back to its millage this year, but due to budget issues, it is warning that a roll forward is likely to occur next year.
This afternoon, the Bossier Parish School Board will hold a hearing on property taxes at 4 p.m. in the Bossier Instructional Center on Airline Drive.
Earlier this month, Bossier Schools released new details on its property tax plan. Like the Bossier Parish Police Jury, the school board appears to have changed its mind about raising property taxes.
"We're looking at like a 2.99 mil increase as a result of the roll forward," Bossier School Board Chief Financial Officer, Nicia Bamburg said. "The debt service [millage], though, we're going to be lowering it by 3.5 mils. And so that's where we're getting a net decrease for the public."
For example, on a property valued at $250,000, Bamburg said, "I think it's about $280 in net savings for that particular homeowner."
The meeting will discuss the tax plan, and the school board will vote on the matter.
Nov. 5 election candidate profile: James Cook, for Mayor of Plain Dealing
BossierNow has contacted Bossier Parish candidates for the November 5 election and requested that they complete a profile questionnaire. This is the profile of James Cook, a candidate for Mayor of Plain Dealing.
Cook retired from CenturyLink after 38 years. Currently, he is an Alderman in District 1 for the Town of Plain Dealing.
Why do you want to serve (or continue to serve) in office?
Because I love our town. To continue working on our town’s infrastructure. And I want our town to prosper.
If you have held office, what have been your greatest accomplishments? If you have not held office, what have been your greatest accomplishments in service to the community?
We have got the Teal Jones Mill coming online, with Plain Dealing suppling the water to the mill. We got new electronic water meters for the town citizens. And obtaining grants for the town.
What issues do you consider as your top three future priorities?
Continue working on the infrastructure. Working on addressing dilapidated properties (property standards). Bringing businesses into our town.
What is the most compelling reason voters should choose you?
Because I care about our town, and I want to see it grow and prosper. I interact with our citizens with their concerns and ideas.
Tell us something about yourself that the general public probably doesn’t know.
I volunteer on projects in town for various organizations. I was raised in Plain Dealing. And graduated from Plain Dealing High School.

Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday
As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, it's time to prepare for the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST). This year, DST will officially end on Sunday, November 3, 2024.
When DST ends, we "fall back" one hour. This means that at 2:00 AM on Sunday morning, clocks will be turned back to 1:00 AM. While this may seem like a small change, it can disrupt sleep patterns and daily routines.
Tips for adjusting to the time change
Prepare your devices: Ensure that your clocks, smartphones, and other devices are set to adjust for the time change automatically.
Adjust your sleep schedule: Start adjusting your sleep schedule a few days before the time change. Go to bed and wake up earlier to ease the transition.
Be mindful of daylight hours: With less daylight, it's important to be aware of changing light conditions, especially when driving.
Check important dates and times: Double-check important appointments, meetings, and deadlines to avoid any confusion.
