Beyond Bossier
Bossier City's overall crime rate fell nearly 7% in 2024; however, violent crime higher
The Bossier City Police Department has released crime statistics for 2024, showing overall crime fell almost 7% (6.7%) year-over-year. BCPD reported 2,893 total crimes in 2024, compared to 3,101 in 2023.
Property crime fell 9%; however, violent crime was up 6.2%. That was due to a 10% increase in aggravated assaults, from 390 in 2023 to 431 in 2024.
Theft remains the most reported crime in Bossier City, by far, but fell 6% in 2024.
Mayor Tommy Chandler said that public safety has been his number one priority, and he is pleased to see that there was a marked decrease in crime in Bossier City.
Chief of Police Daniel Haugen attributed the lower crime rate to "good policing and community involvement."
The Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office also previously reported a lower crime rate in 2024. In areas outside the city limits of Plain Dealing, Benton, Haughton and Bossier City, violent crime decreased by 2%, and property crime decreased by 23%.
Pause on North Bossier residential development extended
The Bossier Parish Police Jury extended the moratorium on all new residential development by another 90 days at Wednesday's meeting. The pause on home building is now in effect through the first week of June.
The Jury is struggling to establish new standards for street construction and possibly lot sizes while considering funding for road improvements required to accommodate North Bossier's growing population.
The home building moratorium is in the corridor bordered by the Red River to the west, Highway 162 to the north, Highway 157 to the east, and I-220 and I-20 to the south.
The hiatus excludes minor and amended subdivisions, subdivisions that have received preliminary plot approval, and entities with an approved master plan by the Metropolitan Planning Commission and the Bossier Parish Police Jury. An approved phase one development will be allowed to continue subject to the rules that applied at the time of the application.
The moratorium does not apply to commercial, industrial, or minor subdivision developments of two lots or less.
Expanding Bossier Parish Camp facilities
The Jury is also applying to the Louisiana Office of State Parks Division of Outdoor Recreation to seek federal financial assistance to develop additional facilities for the Bossier Parish Camp.
A grant would pay half of the cost of the additions.
BPPJ is looking to add eight RV campsites, two permanent camping sites, and two pavilions for a total matching cost to the Jury of $700,000.
Lane closures: Jimmie Davis Bridge construction
The northbound lanes of Brookshire Arena Drive in Bossier City will be closed on Monday, February 24, 2025.
Additionally, the right turn lane from LA 511 (Jimmie Davis Hwy) onto Brookshire Arena Drive will be closed.
These closures are anticipated to last approximately three weeks and will allow the contractor for the ongoing Jimmie Davis Bridge replacement project to install drainage structures associated with the project.
Motorists wishing to travel northbound on Brookshire Arena Dr. will be detoured west on LA 511 to Arthur Ray Teague Pkwy northbound, to Kubota Way (formerly Reeves Marine Drive) and back to Brookshire Arena Dr.
Southbound traffic on Brookshire Arena Drive will not be impacted during this work.
In addition, Thursday, February 27, 2025, will see a brief closure of the Arthur Ray Teague Parkway at the Jimmie Davis Bridge in Bossier City to allow the crane to move back across the roadway. This is part of the ongoing Jimmie Davis Bridge (LA 511) replacement project.
This closure will occur at approximately 9:00 am and is expected to last no longer than about 15 minutes. Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal.
